While I find websites every day that make me laugh, there are a few that always seem to deliver. Some of the are older, some are newer, but I love and cherish every one of them and would hug each of their creators for making my world better through their sarcasm and pointing out other people’s flaws.

People who follow me on Twitter or are friends on Facebook often ask me “where the hell do you find this stuff??” At the risk of giving away all of my secrets, I’m sharing the sources of all of teh funny with you. I recommend avoiding all of these links if you ever want to be productive at work ever again.

Note: This blog post was originally published on January 19, 2009, but I’m republishing it with lots of new additions. Enjoy!

Awesomely Geeky

Doctor Fun – when I first stumbled across this comic strip, I was simply blown away. Dave, the genius behind Doctor Fun, seems to have a bizarre fixation with Cthulhu, squirrels and marshmallow peeps, but let’s not hold that against him. This strip is perfect for anyone with a background in biology, computers, and general geekiness. I’d say he reminds me of Gary Larson, but that seems to be a kiss of death for comic strip artists. Doctor Fun is no longer in production (which breaks my freaking heart) but there are years of awesomeness you can browse through available in the Ibiblio archives.

Bash.Org – Database of funny and embarrassing quotes from IRC. This site has been around for ages, but they’re still adding new ones every few weeks. The RSS isn’t official, but does a web scrape to deliver the newest quotes to your feed reader, available here. Or follow @bashquote on twitter.

Penny Arcade [rss] – Honestly, if you haven’t heard of this comic, you have no right calling yourself a geek – but I have to include it for the sake of completeness. Funny, totally nerdy, sometimes mean – one of my favorites, and its thanks to Penny Arcade that I first started listening to Jonathan Coulton.

xkcd [rss] – Supremely geeky, sometimes sad, sometimes sweet, xkcd has to be one of the smartest comics out there. I own the “sudo make me a sandwich” shirt, and the people who get it, love it. The rest can sod off. This comic resonates with computer geeks, math nerds, physics brains, and code poets alike. Follow @XKCDrss on Twitter.

Diesel Sweeties [rss] – a pixelated paradise of nerdiness, complete with human-hating robots, a talking toaster and self-doubt. Follow creator @rstevens on Twitter.

Userfriendly [rss] – Sysadmin/Programmer/Cthulhu humor. Absolutely outstanding, however since these guys are sysadmins and not web developers, their RSS feed kinda blows, as it doesn’t show any actual content.

The Daily WTF [rss] – Funny error messages, spaghetti code and software development stories from the IT industry. Follow @DailyWTF on Twitter.

Noobz! [rss] – If you play MMORPGs, you won’t want to miss this weekly gem.

IrregularWebComic [rss] – Think Robot Chicken in web comic form, using LEGOs.

Stupid monsters someone was paid to make = the best job ever - from headinjurytheater.com, this is a collection of some of the dumbest and hilariously funny Dungeons & Dragons monsters ever created. The commentary is perfection in print.

For everyone else

I Can Has Cheezeburger [rss] – Not a new site by any means, but I love it.

FailBlog [rss]

Amazingly epic fails found in the wild and delivered daily. Follow @FailBlog on Twitter.

This is a major pet peeve of mine, so I find this blog hilarious.

Blog of, well, awkward family photos. I have a few I could submit myself, but I’d rather save myself the embarassment and pretend I come from a normal, well-adjusted family.

I’m pretty sure my mom is a ghost writer for some of these emails. Fortunately, not the one above. I don’t think. If you’re not sure what a Fleshlight is, click here. But don’t say we didn’t warn you.

Hand-curated collection of bizarre and often frightening things for sale on Etsy.Com. My favorite is the vagina category. Because there apparently a need for a vagina category.

PictureIsUnrelated.Com [rss]

Blog of utterly inexplicable photographs. I would have to assure there are explanations for all of these, but I’ll be damned if I know what they are. This one came from the comments, and I’m so glad it did. Thanks, Marc Brooks

Foamy the Squirrel – Although this technically isn’t particularly geeky, and it technically isn’t a web comic, since they are Flash Animations, EVERYONE should know about the wonder that is Foamy. Go there now – you’ll never be the same.

Cyanide & Happiness [rss] – bizarre, often naughty web comic

419 Eater

Fabulous collection of Nigerian email scams and the people who fight them. My all-time favorite from their list is Phil Mycrackin with Semen. It’s long, but totally and completely worth the read.

The Hasselhoff Calendar: Our Gift to You

While a David Hasselhoff calendar is funny enough in its own right, the author of this post goes through month by month with fantastic commentary, turning it into comedy gold. I play a joke on a friend of mine who works in animal welfare. We frequently send each other PDFs of new laws, reports, etc – and every few months, I send him an email with the subject “Urgent! Need your help!” or some such thing. I change the file name and attach a copy of this calendar, tricking him into opening it on the premise of it being some urgent animal welfare matter. The joke has been running for years now and never fails to amuse. Incidentally, the PDF is available at the link.

Videos that always make me laugh or smile

There are some things on YouTube that make me laugh every single time I watch them, no matter how many times I’ve seen them before.

Habanera from Carmen, performed by the Swedish Chef and Beaker – This is one of my favorite things in the whole, wide world. The mp3 is available here, in case you want to use it as a ringtone.

Video for ‘Coder Girl’ by Dale Chase – My adoration of Dale is no secret, but this was a favorite even before I got to know him and what an awesome guy he is. (PS – download his album Absodefilutely from Amazon MP3 – its less than $6 and totally worth it!)

Skill vs Gear – Herring Seeks Your Life – Mutilate Rogue PVP – As a big Warcraft nerd, I love this video. Watch a guy dual-wielding fish, wearing only a tuxedo shirt, kick the crap out of everyone to the tune of the Ratatat remix of Biggie’s “Party and Bullshit”. Epic.

High-Kick Girl - video of a Japanese girl kicking some dude in the head.

Clitter! – Infauxmercial for Clitter, the feminine product that turns your labia into a YAY-bia!

Slow Loris Loves Getting Tickled – So cute, I think I get diabetes every time I watch it.

Those are some of my favorite things on teh intarwebs – what are yours? Let me know in the comments.

snipeyhead: I have decided that the only thing that would make Linux more stable, reliable and awesome is if it were written by chuck norris

And, it went pretty much downhill from there. This is yet another time when the cleverness of the people who choose to follow me impresses the hell out of me and makes me laugh my ass off. I’ve included links to their Twitter accounts with their tweets, so you can follow them and marvel at their wit too.

I’ve tried my best to backtrack all of them to include them, but I may have missed a few. The tweets were flying by pretty quickly. It actually reminded me a lot of the #giantblueglowingcock meme from a few months back. I don’t usually get into the Chuck Norris jokes and memes, but the geek flavor kept this one going for a while.

Also please note that I am aware that there are some semantic issues with the tweets. Nobody “writes” Linux, etc. We only have 140 characters, so cut a little slack. We called this fictional version of Chuck Norris Linux ‘Chux’.

My favs are in bold

snipeyhead: And IF Linux were written by chuck norris, it would already have CP/IP (Cockpunch Internet Protocol) built in

brlittle: Chuck Norris does not need to punch anyone in the cock. He simply forces them to cockpunch themselves by sheer force of will.

jamiecalder: And it wouldn’t have a keyboard or mouse you couldn’t control it, it would control you.

snipeyhead @brlittle true, but he would build in the cp/ip for the rest if us

jamiecalder: Chuck Norris would never be able to finish writing Linux. Mr. T would beta test it and pity him into quitting.

So I’ve been on a bit of a haiku-kick lately, and decided to do something about it. The recent obsession started, I think, with my commute.

I commute 4.5 hours a day every day to work, round trip, and it’s really quite miserable. I can handle the drive to the bus station, I can handle the subway once I get into the city, but the bus ride itself can often be infuriating.

I don’t have many rules for my fellow passengers – only two really. Don’t touch me, and be quiet.

<rant>

Don’t touch me means that I don’t want to feel your overstuffed wallet digging into my thigh. It means that I know your testicles are not so huge that that you have to spread your legs all the way apart when you sit down, causing your leg to touch mine. It means I don’t want to feel the heat from your arm on my arm, and I certainly don’t want to feel your arm hair touching my arm hair. Don’t. Fucking. Touch. Me.

Be quiet means that if you’re going to use your cellphone, please do so quietly with respect for the fact that most people on the bus try to sleep. That also means that if you’re going to wear headphones, please invest in a pair that don’t suck, so I don’t have to hear your shitty music.

</rant>

I’d add rules like “Please try bathing once in a while”, and “Please do not drown yourself in enough perfume to make you stink like a French whore”, but considering the fact that the first few rules seem so impossible for people to follow, I think that might be pushing it.

Anyway, one of the ways I keep myself sane on the commute home, particularly if I’m stuck next to someone who is touching me, won’t shut up, smells bad, or some combination of the above, is to vent my frustrations on Twitter. Anyone who has followed me on Twitter for any amount of time has been witness to the torrent of furious tweeting that occurs when I’m sitting next to someone particularly awful.

I don’t know most of my fellow passenger’s names, so I make them up based on distinguishing characteristics. Some of you may have heard tales of Ethyl McChedderSnatch, an older woman who often sits next to me and who smells a bit like Clorox bleach and moldy Gouda. She’s a large woman, and she spills over into my seat, thus violating my first rule, and the fact that she smells bad only compounds the experience.

So one day at work, I decided that, to amuse myself, I would try to speak only in haiku to my cow-orkers. I like where I work, despite the fact that the vast majority of the people I work with are marketing people, not techs – but I thought it would be fun to try anyway. It started simply with a tweet:

For today only
I speak only in haiku
Frustrate co-workers

My cow-orkers didn’t have nearly as much fun with it as I did, but it sparked some fun haiku entries on Twitter.

I had been collecting geek haiku for a while, and was surprised to see that the domain name geekhaiku.com was available. Simultaneously, it occurred to me that my cranky haiku were actually helping alleviate my stress. Twittering my anger and frustration was helpful, but somehow the act of thinking about it, and making it fit within the 5-7-5 format of a haiku was even more cathartic. For me, it turned a source of frustration into something fun that had the added bonus of making other people laugh – something that always makes me feel better and less stressed.

I enjoy seeing the responses from people, and knowing that I’ve been able to make my Twitter followers laugh. It’s my way of turning something miserable into something… well, less miserable.

So that the same time, GeekHaiku.Com and CrankyHaiku.Com were born. We’ve gotten some great submissions so far, and I’m excited to see where they both go.

GeekHaiku.com is (obviously) for geeky, often computer/gaming related haiku. Some of my favorites so far:

Inbox Zero
Oh InboxZero
The unattainable goal
Not getting things done

Gmail spam filters
Gmail spam filters
At one time you ruled email
now are made of fail

My Tiny Mage Friend
My tiny mage friend
Nougat-filled aggro-magnet
I wait by your corpse

Fabulously, ThinkGeek is holding monthly geek haiku contests, where the winning entry wins $50! Click here to learn more. I ended up ‘nicking a few of my favs from there and adding them to GeekHaiku.Com, just so I had them in the collection. They’re awesome. (And by the way, if you submit a haiku to GeekHaiku.Com, you’re welcome to submit it to ThinkGeek. I don’t know if they have a policy against it, but I certainly leave the author’s original copyright on their work and have no intention of claiming it.)

While there are some overlaps, as many things geeky also make me cranky, CrankyHaiku.Com is geared at non-techs with less-geeky themes. Some of the haiku submitted have been serious, some funny, but hopefully it’s all cathartic and helps the pissed-off poet diffuse a little anger.

Some of my favorites from there:

Dear Paul
Dear Paul, I’m sorry
The three-way didn’t work out
You made me laugh, though.

I could bang my dick
I could bang my dick
on the keyboard for an hour
and make better code

Pricey ivy league
Pricey ivy league
education at Stanford?
Still an idiot.

All day water flows
All day water flows
stupid desktop waterfall
I now have to pee.

You horrible cow
You horrible cow
put down the fucking cellphone
and die in a fire

In the process of finding additional haiku and resources for the sites, I came across from fun stuff you might enjoy. Unsurprisingly, twitter user @geekhaiku has some fantastic gems (which I have rather unceremoniously snagged and added to GeekHaiku.Com). He doesn’t tweet often, but when he does, they’re always quite good. Worth following.

Twitter user @twaiku aims to do something similar to what I’m doing, only they’re looking for serious poetry – actual haiku, as opposed to the bastardized senryū we’re doing – more on that in the final notes though. So if you’re feeling poetic, and would love to share your prose but its neither cranky or geeky, send it over their way to share it with the world.

Final Notes

Haiku is a mode of Japanese poetry, the late 19th century revision by Masaoka Shiki of the older hokku, the opening verse of a linked verse form, haikai no renga. The traditional hokku consisted of a pattern of approximately 5, 7, 5 on. The Japanese word on, meaning “sound”, corresponds to a mora, a phonetic unit similar but not identical to the syllable of a language such as English. (The words onji, (”sound symbol”) or moji (character symbol) are also sometimes used.) A haiku contains a special season word (the kigo) representative of the season in which the renga is set, or a reference to the natural world.

Haiku usually combines three different phrases, with a distinct grammatical break, called kireji, usually placed at the end of either the first five or second seven or last five morae. In Japanese, there are actual kireji words. In English, kireji is often repaced with commas, hyphens, elipses, or implied breaks in the haiku. These elements of the older haiku are considered by many to be essential to haiku as well, although they are not always included by modern writers of Japanese “free-form haiku” and of non-Japanese haiku. Japanese haiku are typically written as a single line, while English language haiku are traditionally separated into three lines.

The haiku here are not technically haiku. They’re more like faux-ku. Besides the 5-7-5 pattern (which doesn’t exactly match our version of 5-7-5, since in Japanese, some sounds count as more than one “on”, or sound unit, but only count as one syllable in English) traditional Japanese haiku will also generally make a metaphoric reference to nature or a season. Unless I’m bitching about commuting in the dead of Winter, most of the haiku there won’t follow the traditional rules.

If they fit into any classification (other than mental diarrhea), it would be most accurate to call these tiny works of art “senryū”, a poem that is written in a similar form and emphasizes irony, satire, humor, and human foibles rather than seasons.

With that said, we extend our apologies to any actual haiku artists that may stumble across this site. We genuinely mean no offense or affront to what you do.

This is a transcript of the #giantblueglowingcock Twitter meme from March 9, 2009. This meme, started by myself and @brlittle, managed to make the front page of Twitscoop – that is, until they decided it was too naughty and they pulled it.

The meme is, of course, about the movie The Watchmen, since anyone who has seen it knows that Doctor Manhattan spends much of the movie buck naked, and he is anatomically correct. And, he glows.

The premise of the meme is that after @brlittle came up with the preposterous #giantblueglowingcock hashtag (because of some of my off-handed remarks), we turned it into a game, where the object was to take popular ad slogans and replace key words with #giantblueglowingcock. Yes, it was unforgivably juvenile. It was also hilarious.

As you can see at the very bottom, this all started fairly innocently. Or as innocent as anything with the hashtag #giantblueglowingcock can be, anyway.

I’ve included people who were talking about the #giantblueglowingcock hashtag as well, even if they weren’t directly part of the conversation. I’ve tried to link up everyone’s Twitter usernames, in case you want to follow them (or block them?) as a result of what they said here – because even if they weren’t talking directly to us, they helped make #giantblueglowingcock bigger than Obama and stem cell research on Twitscoop, even if just for a few moments.

A few quick notes for the Twitter virgins: a hashtag, shown by a # sign in front of a word, is used to categorize topics of conversation in Twitter. Using the hashtag makes topics easier to search on in Twitter’s search, and in Twitscoop. Twitscoop is a website that displays real-time hashtag results, which lets users see real-time trends in Twitter conversations. They do, however, reserve (and exercise) the right to pull tags from their stats, lest an army of twelve-year-olds start spamming it with the f-bomb. (Unlike here, where an army of middle aged geeks spammed it with a ridiculous, made up naughty word, which is much, much more mature. No srsly. It is.)

Extra props to @brlittle for taking a screenshot before they yanked it. ‘Cuz you know, screenshot or it didn’t happen.

I’m afraid you’ll have to start at the bottom and work your way up – tweets are displayed most recent first, and I didn’t have time to reverse the order of all 15 pages of tweets about it. A few more thoughts at the very bottom.

Enjoy!

A few parting thoughts

While this is obviously a very silly example of the massive power of Twitter, it’s easy to see the potential for fast-moving, widespread exposure and discussion on a topic (even one as stupid as this). This whole thing started with two people – and you can bet that if Twitscoop hadn’t pulled the tag off the front page, it would have been even bigger and continued on even longer. This was a flash in the pan, for sure, but I think it’s a great demonstration of the immense power people using technology have today. (And no, I wasn’t being cheeky with the ‘bigger’, ‘immense’, and ‘longer’ remarks. Get your minds out of the gutter – I was being serious!)

(If your own thoughts aren’t confusing and impressive enough for your friends, have some fun with this one in your next blog post, Twitter tweet or Facebook update.)

It’s not voodoo – its a simple combination of equivalent English characters (where a p is an upside down d and vice versa), and Latin Unicode characters. But don’t worry, you don’t have to do it all by hand. Visit the Upside Down Text generator at WhatIsMyIp.Org, and just type your right-side-up text into the box. The generator will automatically convert your text into the upside down version.

Keep in mind, the upside down text will probably not work in many chat programs, since the chat programs don’t recognize the Unicode characters, but it can be fun for blogs and social network updates.

For the curious geeks, if you’re wondering how they do it, it’s a simple string replacement javascript. View the source of the generator to see exactly what’s happening, but this bit does the bulk of the work (I didn’t include the entire thing – you get the idea.):

var flipTable = {
a : '\u0250',
b : 'q',
c : '\u0254',
d : 'p',
e : '\u01DD',
f : '\u025F',
g : '\u0183',
h : '\u0265',
i : '\u0131',
j : '\u027E',
};

As you can see, it’s simply going through each character and replacing it with either the English upside down version (d to p, p to d) or the Unicode.

More Text Tools

WhatIsMyIP.Org also hosts several simple (but actually useful) text tools as well, including a list of the HTML for special characters, a text date to timestamp converter, a text case changer (makes text all uppercase, all lowercase, title case, etc), a regex tester, a password generator, etc. And of course, their homepage shows you the IP address of the computer you’re currently using, which is utterly useless for many people but an absolute godsend for techies in specific circumstances.

Have you ever had someone ask you the answer to a question, and in order to find the answer, you did a simple Google search? That leaves you wondering why the aforementioned asker couldn’t Google it their damned selves…. (I have to confess here, sometimes I like being the fastest on the Google draw – people being lazy and/or stupid makes me look like a rocket scientist at work sometimes…)

Introducing LetMeGoogleThatForYou.Com, a delightfully snarky website that gets the point across in animated glory. Simply enter the search terms you used to find their answer, click the “google search” button, and LetMeGoogleThatForYou.Com will generate a custom url and Flash movie showing your luser exactly how hard it was to come up with the answer. For example, if said luser asked you if you knew where to find the lyrics to Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up”, you could send them here. (And no, its not a rickroll.)

The animation is quick and simple, but gets the point across.

If you were ever a D&D geek (like I was), you’l totally appreciate this article from headinjurytheater.com. I was *pissing* myself. I can so clearly remember bringing home the monster manuals and immsersing myself as if it were a fresh bag of crack. (Imagine the movie a Christmas Story, when Ralphie was in the bathroom, entranced by the Little Orphan Annie code, decoding each letter one by one with fierce attention and anticipation.) But there were always a few that had me scratching my head…

Huge props to Jared Hindman for combing through them all to find the very worst. The commentaries on some of them are hysterical.
