Tweetie for iphone does all of that already - the destop version hasn't been updated in a while, but it was just bought by Twitter, so I'm sure it will be brought up to speed soon.

Good writeup. I'd like to see an update that includes newer features; namely, support for Twitter lists and the official retweet method. Also, I personally prefer native apps (Tweetie, Twitteriffic, Kiwi) to AIR because they seem to use less memory, so maybe a mention of memory usage for each app would be good too.

One other client I've found is Kiwi: its interface is similar to Tweetie (read: dang nice), and it uses the official retweet method and has inline image previews, image uploading and URL shortening; but its multiple-account handling, and viewing the timelines of and following/unfollowing other users, aren't handled as well as Tweetie.

Seesmic Desktop *does* support posting to Twitter and/or Facebook in the latest version, with a checkbox in the upper left corner next to the user's profile pic - you can check each service you want to post to.

No ma'am. You can update Facebook and Twitter status in Seesmic, but you cannot update both at the same time, which was what was being compared. I.E. update your Twitter and FB status with one message.

Definitely a Tweetie user ... can't get past there amazing interface. Would do with groups integration but so would Twitter itself! Apart from that I use Peoplebrowsr now on the PC which may not be the best interface but connects to plenty of services.

Looks like Nambu's latest release is much more stable - might be worth another try.

If the Nambu dev can ever work out the lockup issue, then I'll take another look, but yeah, it's pretty much unusable.

Excellent article Snipe, I personally love Tweet Deck and it's about the only one I have ever used, easy to start up, scroll along my twits, dms and replies and it's really user friendly. Never tried any other type of software for twitter apart from that, well, actually, i lied....... I tried a vista widget of twitter which wasn't the best of ones ha ha.

But yeah, an extremely in-depth article on the potential software that can be used for desktop, very valuable resource for any new twitter user to follow and enhance their experience.

Hi Jim, thanks so much for the comments! I hadn't realized the app dev for Tweetie was such an asshat. What he likes or doesn't like isn't really relevant, IMHO, especially if the product is being sold commercially. What users want and need should be what dictates what gets done.

Shame, because you're right - if Tweetie ever added group support, they would hands-down blow everyone else out of the water.

I don't know if Twitter will ever add group support to their API. Since they seem to be in the habit of taking away features instead of giving us new ones, I'm not holding my breath.
